White cedar is a popular, hardy tree, often used as hedges or windbreaks. White cedar can grow in a variety of conditions, but prefers slightly alkaline soil and full sun. It is slow-growing and long-lived, with a typical life span of 200 years. White cedar consists of small scaly leaves that grow off fan-shaped twigs, and it produces clumps of small cone shaped seeds.
