Bladdernut

Bladdernut (Staphylea trifolia)

Moisture: Moist; well-drained
Soil: Loamy, Sandy, Clay
Mature Height:  Small (8-15 feet)

Its common name refers to the papery, three-chambered pods that persist throughout most of the year. The tree has clusters of fragrant cream-coloured flowers that emerge in the spring. The genus name “Staphylea” is derived from a Greek word meaning ‘bunch of grapes’ referring to the hanging clusters of flowers. The Bladdernut tree will spread and form thickets, providing protection and habitat for birds and other wildlife. The flowers also attract pollinators including butterflies, hummingbirds, and several bee species.
