Light: Part shade to full sun
Moisture: dry to moist
Soil: Sand, loam, clay
Mature Height: Small - up to 5.5 m (18 ft)
The American Hazelnut is a multi-stemmed shrub, that sometimes forms a small trunk, with a rounded top and an open, often wide-spreading base. Its young twigs are covered with reddish brown hairs and will develop male and female flowers from second-year branches. It bears annual, abundant crops of small, sweet-tasting nuts 2-3 years after planting. When mature, the nuts are easy to crack and drop free of the husk. Please note that this tree will require a second pollinator to produce nuts. (arborday.org)
